Cyclists and Cycle Tourism in Italy: The 2019 Data

Cycle tourism continues to be a growing trend, regardless of the presence of dedicated cycle routes.
This is confirmed by the data from the 1st Report on Cycle Tourism in Italy 2019 — produced by UNIONCAMERE, INSART, Legambici, and Legambiente — which highlights a rapidly expanding sector despite the lack of a widespread and fully developed infrastructure system across the country to support it.

The report shows a 41% increase in the “active tourism” sector over the last five years: cycle tourism overnight stays amount to 77.6 million! All of this also has a significant economic impact, generating an estimated €7.6 billion in revenue in 2018.

Cyclists — and cycle tourists in general — are not all the same: there are bikers and bikers!
From the super-athletic riders who would cycle in any weather condition to those simply looking for relaxation and escape.

Cyclists and Bike Racks: The Perfect Match

Let’s discover the most common types of bikers, each with their own bike (and matching bike rack)!

1. THE REGULAR BIKER

Passionate, adventurous, tireless: cycling is their life!
With an average of 150 km or more per week, training is part of their routine. On their beloved bike they can ride anywhere: asphalt, gravel, long climbs, steep descents.
It doesn’t matter where — the important thing is to pedal! When traveling, they choose destinations based on how bike-friendly they are, and if given the chance they would probably sign up for the Giro d’Italia!
The ideal bike rack? Stable, safe, but also practical.

2. THE TRENDY BIKER

Always updated, stylish, and on top of the latest trends, they know every bike brand on the market — from famous American brands to niche European ones. Subscribed to every cycling magazine, they never miss the chance to show off the latest technological accessories (sometimes even unnecessary ones).
And let’s not forget the clothing: from socks to arm warmers, everything is perfectly coordinated.
Their mountain bike? Their treasure — probably the most important thing in their life — even though they change it every year!
The ideal bike rack? Without a doubt, the latest model on the market.

3. THE OCCASIONAL BIKER

These cyclists enjoy riding but only occasionally — perhaps for a short tour nearby or to make exploring a historic city center more dynamic. They prefer paved roads, gentle hills, and easy descents. Range? Maximum 30 km in a day!
Ideal bike rack? A practical and compact one, preferably mounted on the wall or ceiling.

4. THE LAZY BIKER

One thing is certain about them: they don’t like competition (or long rides). If they decide — usually because they were convinced by friends — to join a group ride, you can easily spot them: they are the one at the back, always making everyone wait! A climb? Better to get off and walk! Their bike doesn’t help either: usually an old, poorly maintained one inherited from a distant cousin.
Bike rack? At best, a kickstand.

No matter which type of biker you are, the important thing is to ride — and, above all, to know where to store your bike!
