EUROPE’S MUST-SEE CYCLE ROUTES

Cycling tourism is already a well-established trend in Europe, especially in Central and Northern countries.
In this article, we will explore some of the most beautiful cycling routes in Europe, perfect for those who love combining the thrill of the saddle with the discovery of new landscapes.
Ready to ride? Hop on your bike and let’s go!

1. Along the Banks of the Danube

One of the best-known and most popular cycling routes in Europe runs along the entire Danube: from its source in Germany to its mouth in the Black Sea, covering a total of 300 km.
Places you absolutely shouldn’t miss include the three capitals starting with “B” (Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade) and the charming Schoenbuehel Castle. The route runs partly on dedicated cycle paths and partly on low-traffic secondary roads, making it suitable for all types of cycle tourists, both experienced riders and beginners.
To fully enjoy the landscapes and visit the cities without rushing, it’s recommended to dedicate at least 6–7 days to the trip, especially if you are not an experienced cyclist.
And the return trip? You can easily take the train. Austrian railways provide special trains for cyclists. The best time to ride this route is between May and September.

2. The Loire Cycle Route

This route — also known as Loire à Vélo — runs entirely in France along the Loire River, from its mouth on the Atlantic Ocean to the inland regions, covering 800 km.
A perfect combination of culture, gastronomy, and nature, this route allows you to discover the famous wine roads, ancient fortresses, and castles such as Chambord, Amboise, and Chenonceau.
Fully equipped for cyclists, this cycle route offers the possibility to choose between different itineraries with varying lengths and difficulty levels, making it suitable for all types of cycle tourists.

3. Avenue Verte: From Paris to London by Bike

The distance between London and Paris doesn’t seem so great with the Avenue Verte! Opened in 2012, this cycle route connecting the two capitals is a must for European cycle tourism. It’s a scenic and fascinating journey through landscapes, castles, cathedrals, and charming villages.
The route covers 460 km and mainly runs through France, passing by beautiful castles and picturesque villages. The itinerary has no significant elevation changes and is mostly flat. Not all sections of the Avenue Verte are paved, as some parts include gravel, dirt, and grass paths, so a trekking bike is recommended.
And how do you cross the English Channel? Simply take the ferry.

4. Cycling Among the Stars: Starry Night Cycle Path

Dreaming of cycling under a starry sky? Spend a weekend in the Netherlands, head to Brabant — where Van Gogh grew up — and discover the Starry Night Cycle Path, a cycling route dedicated to the famous painter.
Designer Daan Roosegaarde created something truly unique: a fluorescent bike path that lights up at night thanks to solar energy.
The pattern of the decorations is inspired by Van Gogh’s famous painting The Starry Night from 1889.
Among all the routes listed, this is the shortest — just 2 km — but undoubtedly the most unusual. The spectacle it offers is unforgettable!
Try it and see for yourself.
